The Jimmy V Foundation was founded by ESPN and Jim Valvano in 1993 after Jimmy V was diagnosed with terminal cancer. To date the charitable foundation has raised over $70 Million. The foundation has awarded grants to 37 states as well as the District of Columbia. 100% of their donations are given to cancer research and related programs.
Jim Valvano was born in New York on March 10, 1946. He attended and played basketball at Rutgers University from years 1964 to 1967. He led the Scarlet Knights to a 3rd place finish in the NIT tournament in 1967. Jimmy V is also 21st all time in scoring at Rutgers. He then went on to coach at John Hopkins where he lead the team to its first winning season in 24 years. Jimmy V also coached at Bucknell University and Iona College where he made two NCAA tourney appearances. In 1980 he was hired to coach at North Carolina State University. In 1983 NC State won the ACC title and the NCAA title. In 1990 be moved onto broadcasting working for ABC and ESPN. Sadly in June of 1992 Jim Valvano was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Even in his dire condition he continued to broadcast as a color commentator for ESPN. Jimmy V passed away on April 28, 1993 from cancer. He was 47 years old and it was before his time. His legacy lives on today and forever because of The Jimmy V Foundation.
