Scrap the BCS, Nuke the Computers

It’s time for a playoff. Every year there is a debate on why there should be a playoff format instead of the BCS. Every year some team thinks they got the shaft and in most cases they have a beef.

This year LSU, a team with two losses, will play for a national championship. But wait a minute... USC, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma, all 2 loss teams, have been playing their best football in the past month. Why not them? Oklahoma bombed #1 Ranked Mizzou for the second time. USC steamrolled through their last four games which included a ranked California and Arizona St. Virginia Tech dropped a close game to #2 Ranked Boston College but did get throttled by LSU. That being said LSU trumps Va. Tech but if there was ever a year where a playoff was needed it is this year considering Hawaii is undefeated.

In 2004 unbeaten Auburn was in the back seat when undefeated Oklahoma and USC played in the national championship game. USC beat Oklahoma and Auburn beat Virginia Tech. Both USC and Auburn finished the season undefeated. Oh did I mention, Boise St. and Utah were also undefeated going into their bowl games. Boise St eventually lost but Utah won. Three teams finished the 2004 season undefeated. Had there been a playoff format in place there would have been a clear cut champion.

In 2006 an unbeaten Boise St. team was given no respect as all mid major teams receive. They were given an at large bid into the Fiesta Bowl against Big 12 Champion Oklahoma. Boise St went on to shock Oklahoma proving they deserved a shot at a National Championship. Once again more than one team finished the season undefeated leaving us no clear cut champion.

Money, Money, Money… It’s all about that mean green. You would think the BCS and NCAA have enough money. Stop whoring out college athletes! You are unmoral and unethical. The players bust their asses every year and they deserve a playoff.

My attempt at a solution: 8 Team Playoff (6 auto bids, 2 at large) or 10 Team Playoff (6 auto bids, 4 at large with 2 play in games). Every year the name of the championship game rotates through Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar. If this upsets the sponsors I really do not care but to appease them they can sponsor the playoff games. Continue to play the remaining bowl games as they are every year.
