Appalachian St became the first team to win 3 consecutive NCAA Division 1-AA football championships by bouncing Delaware 49-21. Thus proving their win over Mighty Michigan was not a fluke. It further proves that scheduling a game against a Division 1-AA team does not always assure a victory. (See Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa St & Northern Illinois)

Appalachian St finishes the season with a 13-2 record losing to only Wofford and 6 time Division 1-AA champion Georgia Southern, both conference rivals. Delaware finishes the 2007 season with a record of 11-4.

Sophomore Quarterback Armanti Edwards lead Appalachian St despite missing four of the first six games. He finishes the season with 1,948 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. More impressively Edwards rushed for 1,588 yards with a 6.7 yard per carry average and 21 touchdowns. Edwards finished the season with 3,536 total yards and 38 total touchdowns. Edwards should be a shoe in for the Walter Payton Award. This award is given ever year to the best offensive player in Division 1-AA.

Senior Running Back Kevin Richardson finished the year with 1,348 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns to complete a phenomenal career at Appalachian St. He also caught 34 passes for 339 yards and 5 touchdowns. Richardson finishes his career with 4,804 rushing yards and 66 rushing touchdowns. He also had 132 receptions for 1,300 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns. Richardson and Edwards were one of the best 1, 2 punches in college football this year.

Maybe it is time for Appalachian St to move up to the NCAA’s Premier Division 1-A after winning its 3rd consecutive 1-AA championship. They have proved that they can hang with the big boys by beating Michigan. Maybe the Big Ten can man up and add Appalachian St and a conference championship game, but on second thought the Big Ten is probably too scared.
